The Dice are Loaded
1989 • 9 minutes • Improvising ensemble. (Soprano, alto and tenor sax, bass clarinet, bassoon, violin, cello, trumpet, trombone, electric guitar, piano, electric bass, drums, percussion.)
Composed for Toronto's very talented 'Hemispheres' ensemble, this work uses stochastic ('random') procedures applied to rhythm as the basis of for extended improvisatory passages to produce a rather warped 'big band' piece.
The work was commissioned by the Hemipheres ensemble through the assistance of the Ontario Arts Council.
