In a Vernacular Way

1990 • 13 minutes • Harpsichord

A 20th century take on the keyboard suite of old, this humorous work features six movements, each based on a popular dance form or musical style. The fifth movement features the harpsichordist as 'rapper' while the final movement combines elements of Jimi Hendrix with Elizabethean keyboard music(!) The titles themselves are clues as to what inspired each movement:

1. At a Discount
2. Random Regalia
3. A Bent Bugle
4. Tangled Moon
5. Post Modern Blues
6. With a Hey, Ho, Jimi's Joe

The work was commissioned by Les Coucous Benevoles for harpsichordist Colin Tilney through the assistance of the Ontario Arts Council.
