And As He
1993 • 10 minutes • Mezzo-soprano and flute
(Text by Gertrude Stein)
And As He is an excerpt from the larger instrumental piece 'Mounting Picasso. During this section of the work a dancer snaked his way slowly across the very dimly lit stage while the other performers stared at him.
The text is from Gertrude Stein's "If I Told Him: a Completed Portrait of Picasso" (1923) and represents one of the more enigmatic sections of this text:"He he he he and he and he and and he and he and he and and as and as he and as he and he. He is and as he is, and as he is and he is, he is and as he and he and as he is and he and he and and he and he."As presently. As exactitude. As trains. Has trains. Has trains. As trains. As trains. Presently. Proportions. Presently. As proportions as presently. Father and farther. Was the king or room. Farther and whether. Was there was there was there what was there was there what was there was there there was there."
The work 'Mounting Picasso' was commissioned by the Blue Rider Ensemble through the assistance of the Canada Council and Ontario Arts Council.
