Lagtime

1984 • 8 minutes • Solo Percussion, Marimba

Lagtime for solo marimba was written in the fall of 1984. The title refers to the various places in the work during which the composer attempts to tamper with the listener's sense of time. The primary 'motive' in the work is a simple trill, which is developed in a number of ways - growing into three, four and five note patterns, becoming the basis for a 'chorale'-like section and developing into a polyrhythmic texture. It is a difficult work and is intended as a showpiece for marimba technique.

Lagtime was premiered by percussionist Beverley Johnston at the 'finals' concert of the CBC Young Composers Competition.
