Collaboration with visual artist Matthew Talbot-Kelly

Black Water Elegy, composed during the pandemic, is the result of a remote collaboration between visual artist Matthew Talbot-Kelly and composer Peter Hatch, driven by a shared concern for the environment.  The piece creates a ‘conversation’ between the cellist and the video, blending the cellist’s extended techniques with recordings of water and other sounds. Hatch explains, “We agreed to make water a subtle, underlying theme, with my music operating ‘underwater’ and Matthew’s visuals reflecting ‘the water’s surface.” Talbot-Kelly’s visuals, including the newly created animated water surface, draw from his earlier works such as the “3D Strokes (after Motherwell / Digital Graffiti)” series and the short film “Blind Man’s Eye.” Black Water Elegy was commissioned by Ontario-based NUMUS Concerts.
