Reveiller

2001 • 10 minutes • Orchestra 2222/4231/2pc/hp/pno/strings

When asked to write a work inspired by the subject of 'spring' I immediately thought the many times in late March or early April I have spent up at my parent's lakeside cottage. The awakening of the lake and its surrounding area is an almost mystical experience, with the dull colours and muted sounds giving way to emerging new life - like the dawning of a new day. 'Reveiller' ('to awaken') tries to capture some of that experience and its potential for spiritual metaphor, while also making reference to the military wake-up call and the concluding section of the Last Post, which is quoted from off stage near the end of the work.

Reveiller was written as part of my residency with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony.
